It really varies tremendously between individuals. Primarily its dependant on your auto insurance history, and of course as you say, how much of a premium you're willing to pay to lower that insurance excess. I'd say you should get it to a reasonable level, but keep away from the zero excess or even the lower tiered excess plans - the premiums will likely more than offset your savings, unless you're prone to theft/accidents!
I agree with Ray. It gets down to how much risk you are prepared to take and weighing that up against what you might save in premiums. Your own track record with claims in the past would be a guiding factor.
